A Maelstrom *IS* a whirlpool, you are thinking of a Vortex, which is a different kind of whirlpool, and rare in nature. (common in kitchen sinks though)

@a2dak306 I think you're referring to the myth that concerns the direction in which toilet bowls flush. The only explanation to such is the rotation of the earth and the Coriolis Effect but these whirlpools are not wide enough in radius to be affected by it. It's cool to think of it as an omen, though.

that whirlpool is spinning the wrong way.....honestly thats an omen in my books....its suppose to go clockwise unless your in the southern hemisphere....
