It also allows you to keep heavy sleeves (in traditional chinese and japanese dress off the board away from the board. If you try to place a stone using your index and thumb whilst keeping your sleeve up you end up obscuring the stone being placed from your opponent. (a very rude thing to do). The same movement occurs in Shogi for the same reasons.
