Local Heroes - A Town Fights Back
A major new television series is in production in County Louth as part of Local Heroes, an upcoming RTÉ-wide campaign to support Irish jobs.
The town of Drogheda has felt the full effects of the downturn with nearly one third of its population unemployed. Now its citizens have decided they've had enough. Local Heroes -- A Town Fights Back will follow the people of Drogheda as they work alongside Senator Feargal Quinn and an assembled team of experts to try to kick-start their local economy.
Their efforts to save and create jobs in their community over the course of the next three months will be documented for a six-part television series beginning in November on RTÉ One Television as part of the Local Heroes campaign on RTÉ Television, Radio and Online.

  • Great to see you doing something, the part where the older man said about many grandparents not being able to see their grandkids again as a result of emigration was particuarly poignant. It's better to take positive steps forward than to do nothing at all. It's too easy to sit back and slag people off. The videos on my account are of a similar theme and being from Louth myself, I'd like to wish you guys the best and I'll link your video to my blog too. Thanks for posting this.

  • @alephkanuit Taking a stab at people who are a different race from you, won't fix Irelands employment rate neither will it fix what's wrong with Drogheda.

  • Inspiring! I hope my proposal goes some way to bringing the town back to some sort of formality! The talent in the town is seemingly endless and we need to harness this and use it as a positive prop for the town! I gave in a proposal to use the dormant parts of the town with the aid of local talent to have once a month festivities to attract people to the town and working hand in hand with local business to rebuild the community! There is lots more to it, I hope it is taken seriously!

  • Great work been done by all who are involved.I think it's exactly what our town needs and I'm proud my dad was a part of it .no matte what anyone says it's a step I. The right direction ...FORWARD!! Keep up the good work.Together we can make drogheda great again!

  • was that second comment a bit much was it? censorship at its finest

  • ha and the easy ride ye gave fianna fail then in the last election. rte yer as predictable as i dont know what. id be suprised if this is allowed to be shown, i know how much ye like the auld one sided story.

  • Ireland WILL default on its debt, it is just a matter of time. The banks have not been left wanting. The people come last in our greedy capitalist system. All we ever hear about is the economy. We must be a society first and an economy a distant second. What % of tax from workers is going in to bail out the rich bankers?

  • Ireland has always been known for its exceptional hospitality. I was in Ireland for 17days this summer & couldn't believe how awful my group was treated nearly everywhere we went in Dublin & surrounding towns. I did not take them to Drogheda, this my 8th trip to Irland, was embarrasing since I had 10 ppl. 6 1st timers, and more than20, 000euro spent locally! Irland is going to have to lose more I guess before you appreciate tourism. I will not be back for a while! Next tour cancelled!
