At the 2012 SIAM Annual Meeting, Barbara Keyfitz of The Ohio State University presented the AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture titled, The Role of Characteristics in Conservation Laws. The talk described the ways in which characteristics in systems of conservation laws give information about the systems being modeled.
