-Clip 8-
The Real Richard Nixon
Vol. 3: "28 Days"
Interview with Frank Gannon

In this interview/documentary segment, President Richard Nixon discusses his final full day in the White House as president. In particular, he describes his final meeting with soon to be president Gerald Ford, the Watergate Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski and the prospect of prison, his final meeting with congressional leaders, and his emotional meeting with his closest supporters right before he pulled himself together and gave his resignation speech on August 8, 1974.

The video clip comes from 38 hours of interviews that Nixon did with Frank Gannon in 1983 during eight days of interviews spread out over several months. Gannon used to work for Nixon and was well acquainted with the former president. Subsequently, Nixon is more at ease and open here than in most of his recorded interviews, including the more famous Frost/Nixon interviews, which were more confrontational.

This volume of the interview covers Richard Nixon's account of his final days in office.

  • Nixon says Eisenhower called him (around 1 minuttes). Later he says they shook hands??? What is that about?

  • Nixon says he shook hands with Jerry Ford, not Eisenhower.

  • I give a great deal of respect to president Nixon for resigning. He showed a great deal of gonads doing do. God bless His soul.

  • When Ford passed away CSPAN aired some great footage of Ford testifying in front of congress in Fall 1974 in regards to if a deal had been made for the pardon. It was quite clear that there were no deals made.
