The slug that appears to be eating the newt carried on like that for a long time. Perhaps it gains some benefit from it, even a toxin that it enjoys. The newt didn't react to the slug or me and remained in the same position for over an hour at least. Under the lizard is some kind of grub and there is also a white mite in the background.
Sadly, when I returned the next day the newt was dead and I thought that it might have suffered heart failure when I lifted the piece of concrete off it. It was very wet underneath so there would have been quite strong suction as the concrete came up.

  • Thanks. I thought I lifted the concrete carefully enough. I probably won't do that again.

  • Perhaps the newt was frozen with fear due to the human/camera? Good video cheers

  • That's like how I felt. It seems it was a newt, not a lizard as I had thought. Newts do produce poisonous secretions on the skin. Another time I might see if a slug survived when it had been feeding like that. But I've never seen such behaviour before and quite likely I never will again.

  • wow!
