We have calculated that over the past 3 years that GUMBO has served in the area of 40,000 meals to the homeless. So much for the "History of GUMBO". I just wanted to give you a little background on the group so you could see where our hearts were. We genuinely care about the people we serve and do whatever we can to provide for their needs.

The 4 people that we have helped get off of the street have now joined GUMBO and are cooking and serving the very same people that they lived on the streets with only months ago. We currently provide between 60 to 100 (depending on the time of the month) meals a week to the homeless living on the streets of Riverside. So on a busy Tuesday GUMBO provides about 400 meals for the homeless.

About a year ago GUMBO started to provide meals on an individual basis to the homeless that were not in shelters and still living on the streets. Many of these people do not meet the criteria to be admitted to a shelter or have reached the limit of time they are allowed stay in a shelter. In working with these people we have been able to find permanent housing for 4 people in the last year and have another working his way towards that goal.

We started GUMBO almost three years ago and initially we were making about 50 meals each Tuesday that were served at the 3rd street homeless shelter in Riverside. The program rapidly grew to provide 150 meals to the 3rd street shelter and also expanded to include the King's Hall Transitional Shelter at March Air Base where we are now also providing 150 meals on Tuesdays.
