Sheridan (the playwright who wrote School for Scandal) made revisions to it several times since its first performance in 1777, so there are several different versions of the play in written form. That might account for the difference in the version you read and this version.

@AubreyDebrett yess i am aware it is a play but as i am reading it at college in the text format, i called it a novel!!!
