Im going into CG boot camp in November. Im trying for Boatswains mate.

Don't confuse a Navy BM with a Coast Guard BM. The rate is much more involved in the Coast Guard and you will be the one actually driving boats, doing LE boardings and all kinds of other cool stuff on the water.
-
@shakenama They're actually moving towards sending more people to A-school and doing away with the striker program. In fact, reservists can't strike at all anymore. They have to do guaranteed A-school out of boot camp.
-
WOW!. They STILL have BM school up in Yorktown? I thought they got rid of that where everyone could 'strike' the rate instead. Yeah... when you're a 'BM' your a "jack of all trades and a master of none", yet it was the most rewarding experience that I had in the CG. You have multiple roles as a 'BM' - Boarding Officer, Coxswain, JOOD/OOD of a small boat station. There are many roles which a 'BM' can take.
-
@jimmyshk Yeah, BM may suck in the Navy, but not it's a much different job in the Coast Guard. BM's often serve as officer in charge of their own stations and vessels. BM is what you do in the Navy when you can't do anything else. Not the case in the Coast Guard.

@hambone950 I've been saying this for years lol
-
@hambone950 no, there is nothing good about being a boatswain's mate in any command. it's the bottom of the barrel job that they give all of the idiots who they felt couldn't hack it in any other job. That job f*ckin sucks and being in the navy f*ck sucks.
