Barbra Streisand is a mad high-priced "escort" accused of murder, but whether she's mad as hell or mad as a hatter is the question in this courtroom drama, adapted from the play by Tom Topor. While her doting, willfully uncomprehending mother (Maureen Stapleton) and stepdad with a secret (Karl Malden) try to have her judged incompetent and sent to an asylum, she fights for her day in court with the help of a hapless legal aid attorney (a refreshingly understated Richard Dreyfuss).

James Whitmore presides over the hearing with a compassion and sense of justice that gives one faith in a system and la Streisand (who developed and produced the project) sinks her teeth into the tempestuous role like a starving actress.

  • I can see it right now. Angelina Jolie to play the lead role in a remake.

  • @Tomgrrl And Leslie Nielsen (in his absolute last serious role) as her john.

  • There is a section of the film where where she talks about "Love". I love the scene... I quote it.

  • It's sad, you didn't mention BABRA STREISAND in the title!

  • @Bez1960 Men get medals when they punch out assholes; women get committed.

  • Everyone Has A Story and this is the story of Kathie Lee Gifford. How did she finally reach her Breaking Point? Was it all those Saturday Night Live skits spoofing the Christian Kathie Lee who used child labor to make her clothing line? Was it shock-jock Howard Stern -- but he tried to help Kathie Lee when he called the cops after her husband committed illegal adultery. "Let's Get Frank Gifford Arrested" was the title of his radio show. Jay Leno did endless jokes about her CDs, but who doesn't?

  • bery bery good fill-um. And BS with her beautiful-only-when-angle's-just-right looks is quite the image of an costly prostitute

  • So, the criminals(mom and dad)tried to silence the victim because she was bad for their social image. Mom got old and ugly, and dad couldn't handle that. Mom got used to the money, the nice house and the expensive cars and trips to the beauty parlor.
