California-born, French-resident entrepreneur and musician Caroline Phillips chose the Basque Country as her home. Besides learning and singing in the Basque language, she learned to play the hurdy-gurdy, a polyphonic instrument that is over 1,000 years old and was played throughout Europe — yet only a handful of people play it today. She performs the group Bidaia's compositions in world music festivals and concerts on her custom-made Hurdy-Gurdy and is currently recording Bidaia's new album "Agur Shiva". TEDxTransmedia was organized in the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
@shockeyk I'd say that the organ and accordions were the true precursors to the modern synth. Some of the principles apply to the Gurdy too, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a precursor.

I never knew that a Hurdy-Gurdy was an instrument, and such a versatile one at that. Clever and beautiful speech Caroline, great job! I'm intrigued about your inference that the HG was the precursor to the synthesizer, very cool.
