This was such a treat. Not only did the Indigo perform, but Ms. Strong did this amazing sword dance. Filmed 13 July 08. Sorry for the poor quality. My camera doesn't always like to work correctly.
There is so much passion in the posts, before scathing the dancers and their so called lack of talent, watch this video and these beautiful dancers explain their individual style.
Evan Stuart on bass from Brass Menazeri, Eric Oberthaller (EO) from Brass Menazeri, and Patrick Kaliski from Rosen Coven. The song is from the soundtrack to Divided Loyalties by Dan Cantrell, and is played pretty messily, but it is in a greek Tsamiko rhythm.
Liz is an awesome dancer and has studied traditional dance forms in Egypt, Turkey, Bulgaria and America. Even if this may not be her best performance, she is a beautiful dancer with a deep respect for traditional dance forms....and it's the
Awesome! I love the alternately scathing and flattering responses dating over 3 years. Not much to do much. the band is kind of a put together band for the Oregon Country Fair to accompany the indigo. it's made up of Dan Cantrell-accordion from the Toids. Peter Jaques-clarinet from Brass Menazeri (Both Dan and Peter have recorded and Toured with Beats Antique which may explain the confusion)
She did great.....she did floor work, a backbend, shimmies, some hip drops, balanced a sword on her head the whole time, turns and spins, undulations/belly rolls, and arm and hand floreos.....what else could you want?.....Not every performance has to be mind-blowing.....sometimes it's just "a nice performance and a job well-done".....which she did :) and some dances are "fusion" pieces, which means it has elements of many different styles, hence the name "fusion".......I liked it.
@psychobunny32 The guy on the accordian is Dan Cantrell, this is his song called "Bloody tsamikos". Beats Antique is the group that Zoe is with. Liz Strong is not a member of the Indigo anymore. Just Rachel, Mardi and Zoe
@KWEENMOANA i am sorry but there is no cohesion to this...its not tribal, not belly dance, not indian, not romanian yet I see bits and pieces of each...the costuming is not appropriate either. THis to me...just seems like some american women who have a lack of dance in their own culture decided to adopt a "sexy" dance and by calling it "tribal" they are able to justify the lack of structure and cultural accurateness that its missing. Not racist , just an observation.
@paneljump this version of "tribal belly dance" that is in this video and that I have seen grown in popularity her in the states is not accurate. Its branching off into its own style. I am not a purist by any means, but there should be a certain respect for other peoples culture and other peoples art form. In order to respect it, you have to interpret it properly and truly know your craft and its origins, not just be able to perform a versions of it...
@paneljump Your right about using the term belly dance, thats a western term ...if you want to get accurate it would be actual "raqs sharqi". Egyptian "nightclub"style is not what i was referring to although it is a bit closer to the origins of the dance which are actually arabic. My family is from the Canary Islands of Spain and we were taught both traditional and gypsy style which is more like "tribal". But I have seen romanian, egyptian, and spanish "tribal" bellydance and this is not it.
