You cannot achieve great band status in the absence of a GREAT drummer.

@Edinski1 Your right it is usually the lead that plays the high notes, but it is the second player that is called the jazz player and sometimes the fourth is as well, and the third chair usually can scream, that is in a typical big band, but this is not a typical band, your right all these guys have amazing chops

Wow!

that was a great trumpet section he had back then
You are right, it was the Mike Douglas Show. Buddy liked Dom, as they had a lot of fun on the panel and they were friends from before. I have heard from those in the band that it was a great time with nothing but laughs from the 6:00 am soundcheck to taping four hours later.

Being a drummer my question :Is the
lead trumpet the guy who plays the solos or the guy who plays the high notes. And if so does that make the 1st.the solo player(lead) & the 2nd the high note guy with the 3rd & 4th playing the rest?
A big band is only as good as the drummer & the trumpet section IMO
I have an LP of the Killer Force band rec. live in warsaw from1977 polish label and the trumpet lineup is as given on the sleeve notes:D.Stahl,D.Pratt,R.Konikoff & J Marshall,What a band

Mike, The lead trumpet plays the higher part, or melody. He is usually also the high note guy. Usually the third of fourth trumpet is the jazz soloist. However in this band all the guys had good chops (although nobody could do it nearly as well as Dave) and some hot jazz, making this a rare section. The precision with which they played was what inspired Buddy to call them the killer force. It's basically the same band as the Live In Poland album, with John Marshall in for Larry Moses.

As I said, best trumpet section I have ever heard, and of course, Buddy....what else can you say?
