By Feb 2006, 100 UK soldiers had died in Iraq. The Hull Stop The War Coalition held a memorial for the dead on both sides. Martin Deane, of the local Green Party and Hull Stop the War, reads the names of the British dead and another member reads names of the Iraqi dead.
Martin Deane adds, "Now in 2009, the UK government has had to withdraw troops from Iraq. UK troop involvement had become negligible and the war was seen as pointless - if not immoral and criminal - by people at home.
"Now it's Afghanistan's turn. We've created its army, its police force, its political system (proportional representation!) and - arguably its government, famed for its corruption.
" And it's not working. The country is in chaos. Huge territory is under "Taliban" control - who beat Russia, we remember. There is no security because the Afghan people will not, ultimately, be controlled by any foreign power, and certainly not America. It's delusional to think America (ie, NATO powers) can rebuild Afghanistan. We're not wanted.
"And let's not forget that America had planned a war on Afghanistan before 9/11 - for a major pipeline.
"It's time to bring our troops home. And encourage America to do the same."
Hey are you guys doing anything tonight for september 11th?
