such an incredible performance... i would die to see her live :)

@silverskid everything conjures up some associations, so what's the aim of bothering with naming what the influences might have been? take this music at its own rights, at its own atmosphere...

Nearly a year later and I am kicking myself even HARDER in the arse for having passed on Miss Calvi's live performance in Chicago at the excellent listening room at the storied Schuba's. Please come back to Chicago, Miss Calvi. You are an artist with an incredible, perfect storm of elements to your debut slab. Bigger and brighter venues are now your's. Please retreat to that attic again at your folks and follow up with another master piece! Luv always, a big fan.

Apparently Anna Calvi is a "ripoff" of Bowie, Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Patti Smith--and the list goes on and on for the detractors. That's a pretty wide spread of styles to be ripping off at one time. Is it possible that-- heaven forbid-- she has diverse influences including the above (as well as, perhaps, early Roxy Music, Roy Orbison and others)? Not sure if her lyrics are especially interesting, but the song structures and playing/singing are pretty impressive, I think.
