From the upcoming Special Edition Ascent: Commemorating Space Shuttle DVD/BluRay by NASA/Glenn a movie from the point of view of the Solid Rocket Booster with sound mixing and enhancement done by the folks at Skywalker Sound. The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound. The Skywalker sound folks just helped bring it out and make it more audible.

They are recovered, taken back to shore, inspected, then refurbished and refueled for the next flight. These rockets are built to be flown many times before they are junked. Only the external tank is not re-used. The next rocket that will carry Americans into space will also have a solid fuel first stage that is re-usable and similar to the ones that propelled the Space Shuttle.

i think you are half right, the solid rocket boosters don't truly go into space just the upper atmosphere. but then again could be wrong also!!! I'm no rocket scientist!!!! lol

Since there is no atmosphere in space I am guessing these are sounds from within the confined space where the camera was placed!

The spent boosters are retrieved and reconditioned for re-use on another mission.

Okay so once this thing lands in the ocean, what happens? Do they fish it out or leave it there to pollute the Ocean, or is it biodegradable? I'm just curious...
