Disable the traction control (see forum) and you have no problems - you know when its been disconnected because you get a red flashing image of a car in the top left hand side if the display....
Now I get power to the wheels all the time and get slipping wheels but I am in control on the throttle and can now proceed on ice.

Had a look at the below mentioned video by duedesslegne - wish my Prius could do it - my traction control activation cuts in and out but takes ages hence the reason I come to a dead stop on any slight ice incline.
I get my NEW Prius in Feb 2010 and hope the sales pitch on the new traction control software working faster is fact as if mine was like this video I would be happy indeed... Its not the snow I find a problem its compacted snow (ice).

OK so the software in the NEW version talks together better - but will it get you going on ice or will it keep cutting the power to the wheels for 2 seconds every time a wheel slips so you stay stationary when all other cars (stick or auto) pass you by.....
So you know my current Prius is the 2005 model and other than the traction on ice problem I think this car is great which is why I am buying the new 2010 model.
My current Prius has done 84K miles and the total service time off the road is just 4 hours - which speaks volumes - so I have no axe to grind other than this one point which has cause me concern every winter. I could get stranded with this car while in another I could get home so its a safety issue to me.

@brucepeter2007 Yes, I am aware of 2005 TC issue. They improved it in 2006 model year and now again in 2010 model.
Which tires are you running on? Our stock Integrity is crap on ice/snow/wet. It is a summer tire. Check out tirerack's Prius exclusive tire comparison. There are many other (much better) choices now. Well, you are upgrading soon so nm.
BTW, duedesslegne's demo was on light snow on thin ice.

One owner recorded a demonstration with stock Bridgestone Ecopia tires. He even came to a full stop at the middle.
