In this unrehearsed set, Pat Aranda, Tom Brier, Frederick Hodges and Carl Sonny Leyland share three pianos in front a packed room at the American Exchange Hotel during the 2011 Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival.

They had opened with a hilarious seat-swapping version of Maple Leaf Rag (which I did not record), then began the set officially with this tune by Scott Joplin and Arthur Marshall.

  • These guys never fail to amaze me. It's great to see Carl Sonny Leyland in particular. I just found out that he was born and used to live about 45 minutes from where I am right now. He must have had an interesting career to end up so far away.

  • @Harmonyww I have plenty more from this set yet to post, and some solo Sonny too. Stay tuned!

  • How do they do that?

Does every one of them has to play some other part of this(one plays melody, other bass, etc.) or do they play simultaneously the whole piece? If so that's a fantastic cooperation.

    Nevertheless it was awesome playing

  • @arqivus One person will take the melody then the others will embellish, or maybe play it in a different octave. They all do bass except the higher-end person in a four-hand situation, of course.

  • Holy... Guys are amazing. Respect!

  • I'm always impressed by the ability to improv like that. Do you think 1, you must be born with it; or 2, there must be a bit of a mathematician in you?

  • Brilliant with the improvising and having so much fun ! Wish they would come to Australia !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ace :)

  • CSL!!! I love Leyland, I've watched a lot of VBR's videos of him.

Glad to see more "3 pianos on fire", it looked as though they were fighting for the pianos! Thanks Keeper for posting this :-).
