Last weekend, I was a volunteer judge on the panel of Eco-Science Projects for the Fairchild Challenge, an incredible environmental outreach program for middle and high school students. The projects included Solar Inventions; functional solar powered devices that could benefit communities in developing countries, Inner-City Sanctuaries; blueprints & 3D models depicting small garden spaces in inner cities, and Green Cuisine; eco-friendly, nutritional, vegetarian dishes.
The Fairchild Challenge is a program through Miami's Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens that encourages students to appreciate nature, understand the need for conservation, and become actively engaged citizens. There are over 40,000 participants in South Florida, and the Challenge is being replicated in cities and gardens around the world. Other projects throughout the year include creating a school garden, a plant fashion show, intergenerational interviews about different uses for plants, environmental debates, performances, and photo, drawing, and comic strip contests. Hopefully soon, this program will be part of every school's curriculum, ensuring that the future generations have the tools they need to make positive changes in the way we live.
Happy Earth Day Everyday!!!
