What we need is robots in space. Starting with a space elevator to give us cheap space access, we need to send a team of self-replicating robots to the moon. They can mine the moon for ore and send processed materials back while colonizing it. That will be our gateway for then colonizing Mars and achieving a benevolent dictatorship of computers that support us and fairly allocate resources to all of humanity.
