I had some cockatiels up until 5 years ago when the last remaining one died of old age, 2 of them were normal grey cockatiels that were called Valjean & Javert.

Some of the best tiel whistling I've heard on YouTube! This & the iMac one (same piece?) really are his "composition." Allowing for some bad tuning, he stays in the same key & pentatonic scale throughout; there's consistent mood & sense of motion; he repeats & varies melodic themes - this is like semi-improvised human music! And it's beautiful. Reminds me of both Celtic & American Indian songs. I could hear it on pennywhistle or Native American flute. What kind of music does he hear at home?

I constantly whistle or sing around the house and he will just chime in. I listen to all kinds of stuff. He will sing along to most things, including the start up of my printer :). There are a few things I've tried to teach him (like Moon River). He will get a few notes down, but then takes it in a different direction. He has a very keen ear, I have noticed. Rather than sing along with what's playing, he seems to opt for the harmony. A friend of mine says it's Birdy Jazz. I think that's right.

Just keep trying. Cockatiels are smart and learn quickly. But sometimes they just don't like to be held. If you spend a few minutes every day just being close and then gradually start to get your bird to come onto your finger, you will be surprised at how quickly it will want to be close. Just don't give up. Try working with treats.

The clip is out of sync when it plays on YouTube--something happened in the video conversion. And unlike some other cockatiels, Thomas doesn't open his beak very wide to sing. That's always the way he has whistled.
