Yorktown Virginia, Oct 23rd, about 65*F outside.
These guys were all piled up in one little cluster on some logs that have been sitting in the driveway for a bit
I have no clue what they are, but it sure was neat to film them.

***UPDATE*** Eric from the entomology department at Virginia Tech identified these as Bark Lice. Thanks Eric!

  • Weird! Some kind of robber fly? Yellow or black?

  • Definitely not a robber fly. They have long legs and fuzzy bodies. These guys are like short ants with katydid type wings. Their abdomens had tiny little colored bands of dark and light. I blew on them and tried to get them to scatter and they wouldnt budge LOL, they just hunkered down from the wind.
