Walter Becker's great guitar solo as the outro (ending) is the ORIGINAL VERSION of this song that was on the LP soundtrack for the movie "FM". The other version, with the sax solo outro, is heard now more often for some reason. On the soundtrack LP, the sax outro was only heard on "FM Reprise", the last cut on the second record of the double album, It was just under 3 minutes long, and it was basically just the sax solo (which is heard in the middle of the song), then the sax outro, with no vocal preceeding it. Not sure whether two versions were recorded originally, or the sax version was edited in place of the guitar version at a later date.

  • The sax version is great, but so is the original guitar outro. Becker rocks!

  • This song is so damn good I could listen to it forever! The guitar at the ending drives me crazy it sounds so good! Steely Dans songs all had different moods to them. They are some of the best songs ever made by anyone!

  • Very Pink Floyd-ish is Steely Dan. The sax and bluesy feel and the piano / organs.

  • i thouht that 'fm' (not the reprise) on side one is the same version you hear on the radio. i have the LP up at my cabin. i will have to look at it when i go up there.

  • would you please post fm (reprise) version

  • I've loved this song since the first time I heard it in the FM movie.

It made me buy the FM album and I still have it.

  • When I first heard "new version" I could hear were the transition from the main version into the reprise version took place. It's surely an edit, the edit cuts right were someone goes "Ha ha" or something like that on the reprise version. Someone on YouTube has an edit featuring both outros and it's by far better than the official edit version, it sounds so natural how the transitions take place.

  • Is Walter Becker the Dwight Shrute of Rock n' Roll?

  • @TheMexicanJulio Yeah..trish was good!

  • Walter Becker's guitar outro is awesome! Great soundtrack, too from this late-70s movie with the same name, "FM".

  • Walter's solo here is the creepiest guitar solo I ever heard. It sounds like the ghost of a dead child outside your window, wailing, "Mommy...I'm cold..." Sorry if that's too much, but credit where credit's due.
