The story
IBM's reported plans to lay off thousands of U.S. workers and outsource many of those jobs to India, even as the company angles for billions in stimulus money, doesn't sit well with employee rights advocates.

IBM employees are being dealt a double blow, said Lee Conrad, national coordinator for Alliance@IBM, a pro-union group that has been fighting IBM's outsourcing for years.

"We're outraged that jobs cuts are happening in the U.S. and the work is being shifted offshore," Conrad said. "This comes at the same time IBM has its hand out for stimulus money. This to us is totally unacceptable."

  • I love this quote. I love how Lou Dobbs spins it. Obama doesn't say stop outsourcing, he says reward companies who don't outsource.

Also, past evidence has shown that outsourced jobs can create new jobs. Delta outsourced 1000 jobs in 2003 and then introduced 1200. IBM outsourced 3000 jobs and introduced 4500.

P.S. The president doesn't actually have as much power as you'd like to think he does.

  • REMEMBER A FEW WEEKS AGO? IT WAS A FEW WEEKS AGO THAT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY KILLED A BILL THAT WOULD HAVE TAXED CORPORATIONS OUTSOURCING! ASK YOURSELF HOW THAT HELPS UNEMPLOYED! AND MANY WANT TO BRING IN MORE REPUBLICANS IN NOVEMBER?? WHEN YOU VOTE REMEMBER WHO IS ALLOWING YOUR POTENTIAL JOBS GOING OVERSEAS!

  • Hard-core results come from igniting the massive power of emotional commitment. Are your people committed?

Let’s get right on top of the bottom line: You must live your personal values at work. Check out slapCompany

  • Should have let them train themselves.

  • How can you oppose technology progress? It's better to use a bulldozer instead of a shovel. Just as it's better to use the Chinese instead of doing any work yourself. Outsourcing is like switching from manual labor to machines.

  • @Womaaahn Like the good old capitalists, what they did right now is just pure opportunity. Well, all companies in this world only want opportunity.

  • IBM will pay a engineer from India a quarter of what they would have paid a american schooled engineer

  • how many politicians will keep the promises that they made before election?

  • If we want to thrive in the future economy, we have to get better skills, and get better education. It is that simple. Some US companies do not have integrity; they do not care about the communities they live in, or want to invest in thier workers, or pay taxes for better schools, and therefore more innovative workers for them in the future. They are taking the easy way out, tapping into the 500 million educated Indians that work for 200 per month. Ruining their culture in the process.

  • 9000 wtf??? now thats just fd up... wow im abit amazed at obamas answer... i think we should be more like the japanese they make sure not to outsource everything to china
