@ejfan First of all, the question isn't "Who did Hendrix influence more?". We were merely discussing the difference between EJ and JM. Johnson is an amazing player... agreed. Maybe one of the best to put his fingers where others have told him to. Mayer is not the better "guitarist" (by this standard) but the far better artist. When it comes down to it though... Jimi blows them both out of the water. Music isn't about how many notes or what notes your playing, but why you are playing them.

@RobandTodd I totally agree. I hate it when people just base it on the whole technical thing. Look at hendrix, very unorthadox and was a genius. It doesnt matter how fast u can play or how u hold the guitar. What matters is how much heart and soul is in every note and cord you play. EJ is a technician....JM is the artist, well said bro

This performance is from the PRIMAL TWANG DVD which features incredible performances from players of all guitar styles and eras. Highly recommended. You can buy it on the Primal Twang website or Amazon. I saw a shortened version of the film recently on PBS in San Antonio and a friend saw it in Louisville.

Eric Johnson ain't got no soul... He's the technician... John Mayer is the artist... that's the difference...

noooooo!!!!!! man, why the hell did you cut the video when Eric was going to play the solo. It must have been a fucking amazing experience to listen eric playing that and taking everybody to heaven. Any way, thanks for uploading part of this musical treasure.
And to Mitch all my love R.I.P. beautifull musician

I just saw Eric JOhnson last night in San Francisco at the Experience Hendrix show and I can tell you he fucking owns Mayer when it comes to Hendrix material. Even Mitch Mitchel got up to the mike after their set and said how wonderful of a fit he was with the songs. Thats straight from the horse's mouth right there. Mayers good, but not THAT damn good.
mayer is good, but ej's tone is just crazy and smashes mayer into the ground, and i am for fact sure that hendrix is a much more bigger influence on ej than mayer, therefore ej executes hendrix's tone and chops. ej, in my opinion is the best. hes the man!!!!

How can anyone place Mayer and Johnson on the same PLANET? Johnson is 100000x the guitar player that Mayer. I would love to see Mayer try to play Cliffs of Dover, it would be as embarrassing as his cover of Panama.
