Is it worth trying to take a boat and camping on the other side? I know we'd miss the fun part but I'd still love to get there and actually see it properly!
Live in Vic now but we'll be there for a few months from early Dec. Wouldn't mind giving it a shot.

Yeah that may work ok, one of the signs says no boat traliers and boats must be hand launched, depending on what gear you have it's worth a shot...

Attempted this 14 years ago on three separate occasions, never got through (young & stupid, on our own in a Sierra), but we got close. Always vowed I'd go back when I had a decent 4WD. Now I do, and it's closed. Do you know if you can walk through or take mtn bikes? Love the vid, brings back wonderful memories.

you can walk in yes i don't know about mountain bikes, There is now a new track into the western side of southport lagoon, (rough gravel road)NO BEACH and not worth the drive, camp sites are also very sad. We went in last weekend and will not bother going back, EVER...... I miss southport....
