'Tis the season, and that means snow on Donner Pass. And lots of it. This means Feather River Canyon reroutes! UP has their hands full...to say the least...especially when signal problems come into play at times such as these. And with UP intermodals having officially been routed off of the FRC for only a couple of weeks now, it feels strange to call the intermodals "reroutes" to the Canyon. But it's nice to get as much footage of them rolling through here as I can.

Train #1) A rerouted ZNPOA intermodal slowly enters the scene as it negotiates past dark signals at 1:46 PM. Foamers are out and about today (my dad, our friend Lance, and his girlfriend) as SD70M's #5187, #4713, and #4999 lead the 88-car train past.

Train #2) Not far behind the ZNPOA, a rerouted 59-car KMNOA double stack cruises by with ES44AC #5539 and SD70M #3854 leading and ES44AC #7431 on the rear.

  • Great Vid ! I thought Donner went down to single track years ago . The second rail removed to cut costs? Is it now double track again ?

  • @gringo4x4do It has been double for as long as I can remember except for one short distance (west of Emigrant Gap? I want to say?) And that was supposedly double tracked last November when UP did the tunnel notching.

  • Outstanding, been waiting for more of your videos.

  • Thanks!!

  • awesome scenery!! 5 stars!

  • Very nice footage. Now THAT's railroading! Re-routes are always great, and the scenery of Utah is hard to beat. Awesome package. Definitely subbing to your channel. ;-)

  • Whatever

  • No. A lot of BNSFs changed their schedules and running days. It took a little time for things to really get on a "regular schedule".

  • So???? stuff was about the same a month ago

  • Back then only the MNPRV and an occasional BNSF was running. Now there are two UP manifests, three of four BNSfs, and some grain/repo action. They canyon is defiantly necessary with how Donner can be slow/unreliable. But that comment was from a month ago.

  • What are you talking about, the canyon is about the same, you have the MNPRVs, the BNSFs, and the occasional grain train, traffic is about the same (slightly slower) but UP still considers the canyon necessary, if they didn't, they wouldn't be running trains over it.

  • They thought so. UP said they wanted to switch all westbound grain, manifest, and extra traffic to FRC. But really none of that has. All FRC has now is the MNPRV(B). So they're expecting it to. Hopefully it will. I want to get back up but it will probably be a bust with only 1 or 2 trains a day.
