The rainbow in the center of the screen is not an artifact or lense flare. Its caused by high altitude ice crystals. The day I shot there there were extremely pronounced sun dogs ( parahelia ) on the left / right of the sun as it set, sadly my rig was too busy getting this video and I noticed them too late. Oh well, next time!

This is a time lapse created using an intervalometer ( timer ) to get 1920 x 1080 still photos from my Canon HV20 about every 3 seconds. This was NOT video sped up. The series of stills is run through SSMM 3.7 to create a 1080p 30 fps divx at 6Mbps. The exposure is still to jittery, but I expect to have that fixed for next time.

This allows you to get much longer duration timelapses from the HV20 that is possible with speeding up HD footage with Vegas, etc. And it can run unattended for hours or days if needed provided a big enough SD card.

  • Nice lapse! :D Not sure whether to call that a sundog or a "sun-bow", since it was only a partial arc. Some of my videos show a nearly complete arc as the sun refracts thru cirrus ice crystals. It's a cool effect either way!

  • Its a CZA, its not the 22 degree circle that forms around the sun. The CZA is a "upside down rainbow" looking arc that opens upward.

  • Your "rainbow" is a beautiful CZA (circumzenital arc). It is a one of halo-phenomenon. Look it up, please.

  • Yes, its a CZA. But 99% of people would never search for CZA. :-) I have up on YouTube for HD - see my stuff on Vimeo - and I use the term CZA.

  • i feel like making one time lapes vid too 5/5

  • Is this timer a mod? I've been doing 62 minute videos on tape, which is kind of a bummer, but it's the only way I can currently do it :(

  • that is sick!

  • Is that timer a feature of the HV20. I haven't messed with mine yet. Might be nice.

I've been doing video for me timelapses.

  • Can you tell me which intervalometer you used? Very nice results!

  • cool!
