This prototype board reads a standard 65-note piano scroll and sends out MIDI data in realtime. A bank of 65 infra-red emitters and detectors are used to read the scroll.

The roll used here is Kastner&Co. 10270 - Maritana Overture, Wallace and is being played through the Native Instruments B4 synth.

A smaller part of a much bigger project in the works...

I am too, this seems like it could be a nice portable way to play rolls without a player piano.

  • Have you been able to make one for an 88 note roll? I am seriously interested!

  • BADASS!

  • dude tht is so cool

  • ha. cool

  • No, don't run it through the pianola, figure out it's rpm's and build one. Regardless of whether or not ou do that though, still AWESOME JOB

  • great!

  • Looks like the project is coming through well.

As a suggestion, if it's possible, try feeding it into the pianola roller to get a steady tempo. Then again, I don't know if you have a working one.
