Which flutes did you prefer? Which flutes did I prefer? Could I hear a difference between metals? If so, why? Can we prove that different metals sound different? Please send me your comments and feedback on this interesting topic.

  • So Nina, are you going to be purchasing one of those gold flutes? ?

  • Dear kelandjen: when I started this experiment I was really afraid that it could turn out to be expensive for me!! Ha ha. I don't know if I'll actually buy a new flute since my own flute #1 is also a "winner" in my ears...but a gold flute (10K) is definetly on my mind...

  • I you want to notice differences between two metals, the flutes might be identical, so different designs don't influence the sound quality.

Also a less ornamental and slow piece with more dynamics could help to hear the subtle changes.

  • dicompacs: I agree, that is why all flutes used were by same flutemaker (Lilian Burkart) and with same cut headjoints (M2 style). For a slower example make sure to watch the video 10 flute demonstration ROUND 2.

  • After watching your videos I was wondering what do you think about the Burkart 9K G&S flute? Also do your prefer the Professional or the Elite Burkart models?

  • It would be nice to here some long singing tones in a demonstration like this, I suppose it would allow one a better opportunity to actually here the tonal accoustical qualities of the different materials. This so called "experiment" is more of a test of mechanics and response, not difference in sound.

  • I have the same card. its damn good aint it?

  • i LOVE burkart flutes.

i have one of their headjoints.

and of course you sound amazing.

  • you know, it doesn't matter how fast your fingers move. what matters most is the sound that comes out.

  • Where's Nina?

  • The flute influences your perception.

When I use my solid gold chainsaw as opposed to just the normal ruby and emerald studded platinum one I can tell, or rather perceive it to be a better cutter. In reality they both cut just fine. Joking aside...

Can we prove the difference between sounds from your wonder instruments using YouTube? No.

I have excellent JBL speakers and a 128mb Creative SB X-Fi sound card and still can't here the difference.

  • i guess the answer is, you have to play all ten flutes, for as long as you played your flute (#1), then do the experiment again, then you can judge accurately each one! wow that's gunna take awhile...

  • hi Nina let me assure you that #7 flute which was your own flute with the pt headjoint. this sound was the best of both worlds for you. You managed to get all the qualities of gold with the brilliance of silver. i liked #3 which was very similar to #7 but there is so much more body and presence in the #7 flute. #2 is definitly too hard and resistant to what your used to working with but the platinum for you seems to be a great combination. i highly recommend #7 for your next flute..
