This is a video of 3 LEDs (2-265,000 MCD and 1-26,500 MCD 10 mm Ultra brights)running from a single AA battery. Each LED requires between 4 and 4.5 vdc and over 100 mA's each to light. For more info, see overunitydotcom in the Joule thief topic. This is just documentation of my beginning experiments, these little circuits have done more, much more and I will be posting more videos.

  • is the circut board and the soldering required could u just use tape for the soldering and no circut board

  • @asboobsred

No. The breadboard is just to make it easy to try different circuits and is not needed. You will need to solder your connections, especially to the transistor leads. Soldering is easy and the irons are cheap these days. There are some good instructions on how to solder on the net. You can learn in like 10 minutes or less and it is a good skill to have.

  • @PIRATE88179 YES I KNOW IT WOULD BUT IM ONLY 15 AND I DONT WANNA BUY ONE TAPE WOULD NOT WORK.

  • @asboobsred

Hey, my Dad taught me how to solder when I was 10. I do not believe that tape would work at all. You need good electrical connections.

  • I believe it will work just fine with a rechargeable battery as I have run one off of just a supercap before. Overunitydotcom. Just replace the "dot" with a "." (the period) Joule thief topic.

  • Thanks for response, I also wonder whether it is ok to use joule thief circuit with rechargeable battery, and I couldn't find the OUdotcom :(

  • Weeks. Some of the fellows on OUdotcom in the joule thief topic have been running some of their units for weeks on a single AA. (24 hours/day) Their new coil designs are much more advanced than my simple replication shown in this video. Thank you for watching.

  • Any approx ideas on how long can such circuit last on one AA?

  • Thanks! The light output is rated in mcd. (millicandles) A rating of l000 mcd is equivalent to the light of one candle. (I looked it up on the net) I had some, I thought, really bright leds that were 26,800 mcd and I thought that was the highest until I found these. (265,000) Electronics Goldmine has them for about $2.50 ea. These are regular looking 10mm jumbo leds. I am working on my Bedini and also the charger/self runner from fusionchip. I will check yours out as well. Thanks.

  • cheers great work!

wat does MCD stand for Bill?

Ive seen similar leds, they are called star modules, u can get 1-4W ones. joule thief lights it easily.

u should try some charging Bill, chek out my latest vid
