Our intention and history have been to offer esoteric materials that appeal to eclectic interests. Nights of Horror, Volume 1, certainly meets those criteria. This vintage publication fills 80 pages with two short stories, each of which has multiple chapters. The volume has 10 ink illustrations by Superman co-creator Joe Shuster. Pictures have been modified for this video but are complete in the e-book.

Nights of Horror was originally published by Malcla Publishing in 1953. This rare, 16-volume series was the subject of legal action involving a Manhattan bookstore the following year. The mayor's office prosecuted Kingsley Books for allegedly selling literature that violated decency law. They lost at the trial level and on appeal. A small fine was levied.

Men dominate, but women also abuse. Some of the stories may have been loosely based on sensational fiction found in detective magazines in the 1930s and 1940s. These typically told damsel-in-distress tales, but without much sexiness.

According to Publisher's Weekly, Mr. Shuster's 1950s underground illustrations will soon be published in an art comics anthology, Secret Identity: The Fetish Art of Superman's Co-creator Joe Shuster. Obvious political incorrectness today, they may have been a bit of a stretch when published in the 1950s.

  • but is there proof this is Shuster's art? As I understand it, there is only a suspicion he might be the artist

  • no horrors here that i see.

  • only that shuster never draw wonder woman or aquaman, an d he also never was the drawer of the JSA.

  • advanced? Seriously? Freak!

  • Does anyone know the music?

  • Nice retro feel to the artwork - A lot of 'fetish' stuff was around in those days, but underground. It's still underground today. which shows we haven't advanced very much. Might check it out though :-)
