It's hard to root for either side. Lennon comes off as naive to the point of ridiculousness, and Capp, as anyone would have expected, was caustic, meanspirited and nasty. It's a bad match between two extremes.
I think many of us have a mixture of Lennon's ideals and Capp's pragmatism, in different ratios.
Capp belonged to that generation of New Deal liberals who were disgusted by the rise of the New Left, viewing them as inane fools. Unfortunately, it made him a bitter curmudgeon.

While it is true that Capp had the nerve to confront Lennon while most people were kissing his ass for anything he did, Lennon had to expect it because Capp was a known hater of hippies. Like most self-righteous, moralistic windbags Capp got his. In a few years he was exposed as a serial sexual harasser and was hammered with numerous trials, suits, fines and allegations.
