This brief 21 second Adobe After Effects experiment is based on the 2009 film "District 9" Directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson.

I hope to eventually upload a tutorial on how I made this effect using Adobe Photoshop & Adobe After Effects.

For those who do not already know how to accomplish this effect leave a message and I'll direct you in any way possible.

The District 9 alien mothership file can be found here: http://www.keyframekid.com/dump/ship1.png

  • May be it's just a reflection, not the sun. Anyway it seems like if the real sun is on the oposite side and slightly to the right. But the ship is lighted like the the sun shines accurately from the right. As if the sun just hangs in the air near the ship

  • @thfFromRussia Okay I see what you mean, I was hoping it looked more like the sun reflecting off the edge of the ship. Looking at the video now I realise I should have taken the clouds into consideration. I should have lowered the reflection as the clouds blocked the sun.

  • bad lighting

  • @thfFromRussia Anything constructive to say or are you just gonna throw down some criticism?

  • Nice! I've been thinking about doing this since I saw the movie...can you explain or make a tutorial on how to blend it with the color correcting and the sun glare and all? (Without Photoshop)

  • @YRQRM0 In After Effects you add colour correction using adjustment layers and adding effects to it such as hue & saturation, Levels, Curves. After doing so I also added a shine effect to give it that extra glow. Sorry if this reply doesn't make much sense I'm really tired. Let me know if you didn't understand and I'll explain further.

  • Nice job. Not perfect but still better than I could have done.

  • Looks like a 3D photo yea?

  • хорошо постарался)))

  • мдааа....

  • nice work buddy.

  • check mines out /watch?v=Rl4YtRT2Tk0

  • Trying to be completely constructive: First, it looks cool- that is, the overall color correction/lighting is neat. What kills this for me is the trees aren't blowing, so I know it's a pic, also the clouds look like a pic moving from right to left. No dynamics in it. The camera shake in this instance doesn't add to it. A live video plate with this overtop would look much better! Not trying to dig, just offer some constructive criticism. Overall I thought it looked really cool.

  • were you download this ufo from ?

  • but man , i like the sky

  • @TiCasque100 5- It's a better approach (IMHO) to insert CG into real footage, motion tracked with Moccha for example, than to create the whole sequence with layers (for video I mean, a photo does not show any difference). You can match the grain of the original footage if you have the tools, and also apply a tint/color grading to your resulting comp to match the different layers. Honnestly if you would remove your z jittering you would have a very believable shot. :)
