UPDATE: Evidently, using dirt or similar blocks for the holder blocks (instead of glass) decreases the chance of a pig sliding beneath it.
A great way to drown the monsters and get the goods without having to actually fight them! I usually set up four of these channels, all meeting and dropping goods right beneath my fort. Works out quite nicely.
Note that you CANNOT kill spiders with this trap! They do not fit down the hole, so they're just stuck at the end of the channel without dropping and drowning. I usually kill them with a sword so they don't block up the hole.
