GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY
Special Olympics Virginia celebrated Global Youth Service Day on April 24-25, 2009. Global Youth Service Day, a program of Youth Service America, is the largest service event in the world! It mobilizes youth as leaders to identify and address the needs of their communities through service learning projects. On Friday, April 24, 2009, 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.; Special Olympics Virginia, Urban Programs provided a service learning opportunity for youth within the City of Richmond. Over 150 Students from Richmond Public Schools volunteered during the seventh Annual Urban Programs Special Olympics Track & Field Event, hosted by Huguenot High School. Saturday, April 25, 2009, 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., Special Olympics Virginia recognized the success of several youth volunteers, athletes, and sponsors during a Jazz Volunteer Brunch. Virginia Delegate, Jennifer McClellan, was the keynote speaker and spoke to approximately 150 student volunteers, athletes, parents, administrators, media, city officials, and sponsors.
