@eslubin Huh? The Kirk in Academy dayz/JJ Abrams reboot was prolly THE 1 thing to resurrect Trek, imho.
And how is it Paramount listened to their fans? Had they done THAT, Star Trek: Enterprise would've been like their last season all along, in which that show increased in quality & Trek lore a thousand fold (other than the horrible, atrocious, disrespectful finale). But by then, it caught Voyageritis, and the fans had given up on that show, regardless of the better stories being dished out
@Shaggy72 that didn't stop them from ripping his idea of 20 yrs later out of desperation to resucitate a badly flagging franchise that has listened too much to its anal fans
Yes, Paramount should've allowed a budget for a better ending, or re-shoot w/ an entirely new ending, but I have to admit, the basic STORY itself is so FLAWED I doubt even a new Act 3 could've saved this entry.
Shatner should've listened to Harve Bennett from the beginning (to Harve's credit he fought & shined this turd as much as he could) and drop the Shatner-sized ego that demanded they do THIS story (and no, Harve's Starfleet Academy story at the time would've sucked too)
@MasterAccount Shatner regretted how ST5 turned out. they ran into serious budget issues and there was an entirely different ending to the movie. with money and time running out he was forced to rewrite the the last quarter of the movie and ditch many of the effects he had planned. he will be the first to admit how bad it was

Good luck. It will take a lot of editing to save this particular dog turd.
