1973 Indianapolis 500, Part 6

This is part 6 of the 1973 Indianapolis 500. In this segment of the race, we see a critical pit stop sequence take place in which Bobby Unser's crew effectively take their driver out of a chance at winning with a pit stop of about 45 seconds, which was an example of the problems other prominent drivers had in the pits during this sequence. Behind him, Billy Vukovich pitted at the same time and his pit stop was about 25 seconds. Keep that in mind when you see upcoming parts of this race. When Unser stops, that puts Pat Patrick's team first and second with Gordon Johncock leading. However, Swede Savage had pitted during the caution period for Bob Harkey's tow in on the 19th lap, as had Al Unser. Keep that in mind, as well. Also, A.J. Foyt drops out with a connecting rod bolt, and although we don't see it, Lloyd Ruby, who had moved up to fourth place drops out shortly after the 20th lap with a burned piston.

Also included in this segment is a feature about tires and aerodynamics, which allowed the lap speeds in qualifying to nearly reach 200 MPH [watch the qualifying recap segment to see just how close they got]. This is the second of the four featurettes that Jim McKay and Jackie Stewart taped for the race. Also, at the begining of this video, Chris Schenkel, who was in the pace car as he was during the 1971 pace car crash, gives the first of the race updates fro this race.
