Explanatory liner notes by record label ANTI-:

This song is from the perspective of a woman ashore, waiting for her sailor (or any sailor) to return home (with prize money). The lyrics are from the Napoleonic period. Some verses are the voice of a wife or sweetheart. The verse that compares sailors and soldiers is a well-known whore's ditty of the time.

  • Good god this is good, ~Carthy's wahay

  • This. Is. Wonderful. I love her voice! I am looking into the rest of her stuff, I am impressed.

  • I agree with others. Fabulous album that is rich with one glorious song after another. I highly recommend it's purchase!

  • This is the second Eliza Carthy song I ever heard, and it convinced me to start collecting her back catalogue. Saw her last night at the Salisbury Festival with Saul Rose, and they rocked.

  • Awesome, I bought a DVD of a movie called The Mermaids of Tiburon that someone recorded off of reel and they used the Mermaid cover on the back of the DVD box. I never knew it was actually one of the actresses from the film until now because its not on the magazine cover. The film was from 1962 so it wasn't a tie-in.

  • nice one
