This BBC1 tape had exactly the same introduction as the BBC2 counterpart when it was first introduced in September 1968 when it replaced the Symphony in C (Rosetti) tape until it came out of service in July 1971 when the old-rhombus style BBC1 ident on the testcard was due to be replaced by the amateurish-looking version and the tape had been replaced by THe Day That The Hula Was Born. Enjoy!!!!

  • As a television engineer for almost 40 years I never became tired of the test card music. It was great to hear it when you completed the repairs to a receiver!

  • Your musical posts are superb. Many thanks for some memorable BBC trade test tunes.

  • Talking of the 'ding ding ding' (sounds like a glockenspiel to me, not a xylophone), I miss all the old interval signals which were used before every conceivable gap was filled with trailers. I wonder if a recording of the wonderful old Light Programme interval signal still exists anywhere?

  • @londonboyengland - The "ding, ding, ding" was symbolic station identification - in other words, "B-B-C".

  • Same here.

A TV engineer for about 15 years, got made redundant when the TV rental market collapsed. Goodbye Co-Op, RACS, Visionhire, DER, Radio Rentals, Rumbelows et al.......

  • Thanks for these. Hope one day the whole Test Card oeuvre will be available on CD. Track 2, Capability Brown, is the most beautiful thing ever written!

  • @londonboyengland It was the musical notess B B C played on a xylophone hope that helps?

  • What do the 3 chimes (ding, ding, ding,) near the end of this presentation, represent on the D BBC1 405 Lines Test Card, which is also featured on the F BBC1 Test Card?
