Constance Hauman - Lulu - "The Garden of Earthly Delights or Descent into Hell" (2/2)

Lulu and Alwa have escaped to Paris. It is an image of chaos and decadence: gambling, sex and capitalist speculation. In the centre of the stage a monstrous half buried moon engages from the earth. It is beginning the ascent from its origin in the infernal regions to its apotheosis in the final scene as witness and muse of Lulu's death at the end of the act. The stage is full of activity. Everyone has invested in highly prized railway stocks. As the fortunes of the general company rise, Lulu's stocks fall disastrously. Without Dr. Schön's protection, she becomes the target of every unscrupulous criminal. The Marquis in Paris who knows she is wanted by the police will either sell her as a whore to Cairo or turn her over to the police as both offer him a great deal of money. The Athlete, once her lover, is now also threatening her. Schigolch is her savior and helps her and Alwa escape out of Paris as the stock market collapses.
