I was told by professional VW mechanics that 30SAE is the vest for air-cooled engines.

what type of oil does anyone recommend for warm climates, 10-30w?

After you drain the oil, you can jack up the car on one side and let it sit there a while. All the residual oil will run to the side and not out the hole. Much less hassel with the clean gasket surface.
