The very first movement which Rachmaninoff composed last.

Perhaps he composed this movement last because if anything, I feel it describes his failure of the first symphony and ends with a feeling of hopelessness. The movement may be quite complex with those intricate melodies because this is post-depression (his current state of mind). So when he thought back to this, it really seems to give off a bitter feeling near the opening. And then finally, he recalls his beginning days as a composer (happy and major) and to his memories of the first performance of symphony no. 1 before finally, a disaster happens around 6:09. From the failure of the first symphony, comes his descent into depression leading to the piece ending in minor.
