Valente: vocals, guitar,
Baker: trumpet
Brunswick-45N, rec. 1956 Baden-Baden

This lovely day will lengthen into evening,
we'll say goodbye to all we ever had.
Alone where we have walked together,
I'll remember April and be glad.

I was content you loved me once in April.
Your lips were warm and love and spring were new.
But I'm not afraid of autumn and her sorrows,
for I'll remember April and you.

The fire'll dwindle into glowing ashes,
for flames and love live such a little while.
I won't forget and I won't be lonely,
I'll remember April and I'll smile.

  • Thanks for this history lesson of these two greats!

  • I was trying to learn this on guitar but now I've heard Caterina play it......I just can't do it!!!

  • Je veux vieillir en regardant la mer, buvant du martini blanc, et écouter Caterina et Chet

  • I remember her Personality Shows on German TV in the Sixties - the best music program of that time -, and she was a great guitarist, too! As a proof: A few years ago, the German actor/singer Manfred Krug wanted to record a bossa nova CD, but couldn't find a guitarist able to cope with that rhythm. So he turned to Caterina - she must have been in her Seventies then -, and she needed just one take for each song. What a pro!

  • @ejjmuc

Damn right, ejjmuc. She certainly would have loved to sing more jazz. But a Diva of Jazz in the fifties in Germany? So we have only one LP with the great Edelhagen Big Band ( a great honour for her from her label Polydor!) , one with the Sy Oliver Band recorded in New York, AND a "Caterina Valente in London", reissued 2004, available also on vinyl (!), with the Johnny Keating Big Band, recorded with the high DECCA standard - highly recommendable.

  • @superlan67 and sing in at least five languages!!!

  • Hot damn Catarina could sing and play guitar!

  • For any of you guitarists wondering--this is a Swedish-made "Levin" guitar...

  • FABULOUS!
