HEAN Fight for Environmental Justice - Documentary Short - Part II

The National Alliance for Hispanic Health and Hispanic Federation are working together on the Health and the Environment Action Network (HEAN) project. In New York the project has worked to identify the links between health risks and environmental hazards, create awareness of these hazards, and minimize the impact they have on the Latino community.

The New York HEAN sites, Hispanic Fedeartion and UPROSE have worked with youth and community volunteers at select schools on a Pollution-Free School Zones Effort, where students measured the air and water pollution levels in local schools. Together we created a documentary The Fight for Environmental Justice: A Tale of Two Communities, which raises awareness of the detrimental impacts of air pollution from vehicle emissions, emissions from buildings, and touches on how we can develop comprehensive strategies for protecting the Latino community from further health and environmental threats.

The video contains interviews with key members of the NYC environmental justice movement and members of our Advisory Committee, including Elizabeth Yeampierre of UPROSE; Luis Garden Acosta, President of El Puente; and Alexie Torres Fleming, Executive Director of Youth Ministries for Peace & Justice. The video also features interviews with prominent physicians who focus on Latino health and respiratory matters including Dr. Hector Castro, Medical Director at Beth Israel Medical Center- Latino Health Institute and Dr. Denise Serebriski, Director, Jacobi Asthma and Allergy Center for Children, Jacobi Medical Hospital.
