Being that KW is out in the ocean a ways and not mainland FL, does it still get the crazy harsh heat extremes(past 95 to 100ish).

I dont want to be a downer but in truth the whole place is a tourist trap, since 1997 it lost any "real laid back mannor" to its location, but some of the other keys still have a little escape but its dwendling... I cant go anywere down there without the feeling of people with "hooks" trying to snag me! in the 70's it was a real charm there were even chickens and roosters still running the streets just like old times now you rarely see them! only the wealthy or young kin of wealthy enjoy it now.

Key West WAS great. I coulddnt see myself living there for the fact that it is a small island, and for someone with an eager determination to keep busy, it may get boring fast.

To all the praise everyone has heaped on Key West, I would add its extensive and atmospheric old town -- unlike any other in the USA, and better than St. Augustine for Old FL. The BIG drawback to KW has nothing to do with what it is, but what it is becoming. Sadly, the rich from all over the world are pricing out the laid back bohemian types that have always made KW so special. In a few years, KW will be just another posh resort, and the KW vibe just another layer of the island's rich past.
