Might be a consequence of the limited space they had to work with. Maybe they weren't able to program a sprite so big without having to take away much of the other parts of the game.

depending on some flag that gets tripped while playing, his fireballs wont arc that far and you can't actually stand there like in this video or you'll get pounded
