An excerpt from F. W. Murnau's 1926 masterpiece, Faust. This is from the first part of the film; Faust has found a book which tells how to summon Satan in the guise of the demon Mephisto. The summoning is succesful: Mephisto appears as a wizened old man. Faust is horror stricken and tries to flee the demon but Mephisto appears everywhere, politely raising his hat, ready to serve ...
The music is from Gustav Holst's The Planets, "Saturn the Bringer of old Age". Neither music nor film has been edited for this clip, they seemed to fit each other wonderfully.
Please note that the sound has not been compressed before uploading, which means that quiet passages are very quiet, and loud ones are very loud.
With youtube's 10 minute limit, I've had to divide the excerpt in two parts, so look out for Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (1/2)!
