Here we are at floor #3 after a little exploring on floor #1 and #2 and the basements got us no more than an ID-card, rations and some ammo. We're going to need it, though, as the battle with the first boss approaches. But first, get the gas mask.

Earlier, Snake picked up a scope. It works just like in Metal Gear: you select it, then use the cursor keys to look one screen further in the direction you picked. The game is paused during this time. Walls won't block your view, strangely enough.

Here are a view elements from the earlier Metal Gear game that were reused here and continued in the MGS saga: IR beams and gas rooms. Now, Snake can use his cigarette smoke to detect these beams, a little something Kojima kept in MGS. Also, gas in the gas rooms doesn't slowly kill you: first, your oxygen bar has to run down. A gas mask makes it run down slower. In MGS, a gas mask prevents your oxygen level from running down at all.

The strange apparatus that sends out circular beams, I am not sure what real-life security device to compare it to, but if you touch any of the beams, it will set off the main alarm. A quick way out at such a moment would be the dust chutes you see in the walls; it will send Snake sailing straight down to the waste disposal areas in the basement.

So, it turns out that Dr. Marv, who lights up on the radar screen with his signal emitting tooth (yeah, that also was reused in MGS), is a trap. Instead, it's Black Color, a shiruken-throwing mercenary. Het tells you his former identity was that of Carl Schneider, the resistance fighter that supplied you with info over the radio during the first Metal Gear mission. The story about the aftermath of Metal Gear's destruction and what happened to the resistance members and war orphans in Outer Heaven is a key element to the story of this game and an ingredient to those of later MGS games.

Important items:
- the Gas Mask, on floor #3
- Card #2, you get it from Black Color

  • Eh, why exactly? Because black is not really a color or because it discriminates against other colors...? You're not really saying this has anything to do with skin color, do you?!

  • In MGS4 Snake makes a remark to Otacon that's something like, "Makes you long for the day when you needed a different card key for every door." LOL.

  • LOL!! Luckily they made the system a little easier even in this game by introducing the red, blue and green card keys - each combining a set of 3 individual cards.

  • "Good bye...snake" *Kaboom*

  • I believe Black Color is the very first Cyber Ninja ever shown in MG series.

Seriously, when I saw him, I was all "Wow, he looks like Gray Fox in MGS".
