At my school we didn't take our left foot off the wheel. We had both hands on the strut, left foot on the wheel platform, right foot hanging free, eyes on the jumpmaster. Both ways work but our method was just a little different.

I love this kind of exit. just hanging on a wing of an airplane at 150kmh. :)

That's exactly how it was for me when I jumped for the first time! Except I didn't go spread eagle when I let go, but it was more like I pulled my arms toward my chest and closed my eyes till the chute opened. lol
